Hollywood Artists Doing Better in Music
By McKenzie Collins on 2017-03-28
Sometimes, acting is just a stepping stone to being more vocal. Here are a list artists that have more talent in music than movie industry.
“If I can act, surely I can sing and dance too, right?”
Surprisingly, for some, this rings true. In fact, it turns out several artists who have been successful in Hollywood film and TV-making have actually done better since crossing to the music industry. Acting appears on some occasions to act as a mere passageway for musicians to discover themselves.
Take Jennifer Lopez, for example. Before releasing hits like “Let’s Get Loud” and “Get on the Floor” (ft. Pitbull), J.Lo starred in TV’s popular comedy series “In Living Color”. Her ability to perform didn’t simply come from nowhere. She was a dancer prior to landing her most successful role in the film, Selena (which documented the life of the famous Mexican pop star). It was this gig which initiated her move into the music industry.
Since then, Lopez has released an entire seven albums! Although she’s made appearances in a few rom-coms here and there, we’re more familiar with her Latina sound than we are with her on-screen presence.
Another one who began on In Living Color and digressed ever so successfully into music is no other than Jamie Foxx. Comedy began as his first port of call in the entertainment industry. He even had his own show, The Jamie Foxx Show. However, with features on tracks like “Gold Digger” with Kanye West, Jamie Foxx has his acting and singing careers chasing one another for the top position.
You might not know the name Donald Glover, but you’ll recognize the rapper Childish Gambino. Glover has become far more successful in his music career than he ever has done so acting. Glover began as the lead in NBC’s Community. However, a while back the show announced it’d be on “indefinite hiatus”. Glover has been filling the time by making music. He’s recently released his fourth album, Camp.
Drake may have started from the bottom, but he sure as hell doesn't reside there anymore. Before he got caught up on rap-singing, he was playing basketball hero Jimmy Brooks in teen drama Degrassi. He played this role for all of eight years before he became a household name for yet another role entirely: that of one of the most popular rap stars of this age.
Hilary Duff is another actress-turned-musician. Starting out on Lizzie McGuire, she broke away from a solely pre-teen audience when she began to release music. Duff gained most respect as a singer for her 2015 album, Breathe In. Breathe Out. It’s no shock that she made the transition, considering majority of Duff’s films highlight her singing ability too.
Vanessa Hudgens made her film debut as Gabriella in High School Musical. She too has since dedicated her efforts towards singing, and reaped the benefits. Fun tracks like “Sneakernight” and “Come back to me” were crowd favourites around their time of release. Years later, they’re still whipped out at parties for a good time. High School Musical… well, not so much.
We can’t forget Miley Cyrus! She began on the very popular Disney show, Hannah Montana. For a while now, she’s stepped away from movies and TV to pursue a stronger and more authentic music career. Despite her quite scandalous actions, she’s proven she has both the talent and the tenacity to make it in the field. Cyrus has an undoubtedly powerful and raw voice. She’s produced many great hits, including “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball”.
Other movie-stars-gone-musicians include Ariana Grandé, who began on Nickelodeon with the show, Victorious. Oddly enough, Grandé didn’t even play the lead. It seems her secret talent was far more embedded in music than it ever was in acting.
Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato also began on Disney Channel on Barney and friends. Selena continued on the show Wizards of Waverly Place, where she sung the opening tune. Soon, she released an entire album as the lead singer of Selena Gomez and the Scene. Nowadays, she’s a very competent solo artist. Her latest album, Revival, has been her greatest success yet.
These Hollywood artists prove that simply because you begin somewhere does not mean to say you’ll end up in the same place. Sometimes life happens and you realize you’re much better at something else than what you’re currently doing. You may find your interests and talents lie in a neighboring or even opposing field. For our minds are changeable, we ought not to be afraid of diverting our paths to compensate. As has become quite clear, it has the chance to be very worthwhile.
