What are best back-end programming languages for high traffic websites

By Editorial Team on 2018-06-11

Almost all high traffic sites such as social media sites, e-commerce, news, blogs, financials, etc rely on secure, reliable and scalable website back-end coding languages like Java, PHP, Microsoft .Net, and JavaScript.

When you type in a URL, lots of code is running at the backend working to bring a page to your screen. When you plan to build a high traffic website, the first thing that you will have to consider is to choose the programming language for your project. Each language has its own strength and limitations that differ and the selections of the programming language depend on your requirements.

“There is no language which could be titled as “the best” programming language for the back-end. It depends upon the perspective through which you are looking at them.”

In a high traffic website, you will be handling many concurrent requests. Therefore, choosing the right programming language for an extremely high traffic website is very crucial. When developing a website, web developers choose the programming language based on a few parameters. A few of the parameters are features and functionality of the website, scalability and flexibility plans, and web traffic in the distant future.

In the choice of web hosting service, if you expect lots of traffics, a shared hosting plan is not the right plan for you. You should consider a VPS or Dedicated server. The choice for a back-end programming language is connected with the choice of cloud server and server operating system. In this article, we will consider the programming language available that can handle high traffic on a website.

Here are the big-name contenders; Java, PHP, ASP.NET, Python, and JavaScript. They handle most of the heavy traffic website in the world today. So long as you have the necessary server resources.

Java is known for its scalability features, it is one of the most practical languages to learn as it was designed to bypass the complexity of C++. Its popularity cannot be overstated, as the majority of websites use Java to develop backend systems and desktop apps. It’s highly portable as it boasts the cross-platform compatible Java Virtual Machine (JVM).

In most of the high-traffic websites, Java is not the sole programming language, and it is its ability to seamlessly integrate with other programming languages that make it a favorite among a large section of webs developers.

PHP is probably the most adopted programming language in the globe. So many different frameworks are built on it such as WordPress which holds about 60% of websites today. The best example of PHP based websites with over 100 million users is Facebook, Yahoo, Flickr. Etc.

It is highly scalable and one of the easy to learn website development languages. It can be used as functional oriented and object-oriented. Its coding is different and needs little time to get acquainted with the coding style.

This Microsoft framework is the most popular enterprise-level framework. ASP stands for Active Server Pages. It is a development framework for building web pages. ASP was introduced in 1998 as Microsoft's first server-side scripting language. It supports multiple programming languages simultaneously for one project. So, the same application can be built with both C# and C++, via CLI (common language interface).

ASP.NET most recent iteration, ASP.NET 5, is now open to non-Windows platforms for the first time.

JavaScript through its frameworks such as Node.JS and Express.JS can be used in server-side technology, from APIs to entire stacks. JavaScript also combines well with other web development languages and can manage a high volume of website traffic.

It’s crucial for getting into web development, and learning this language paves the way for front-end development and back-end development. It might not be as useful as Python or Java, but it’s generally easier to pick and do something tangible with, in part because of all of the accessible UI features.

Also, This doesn't mean that all languages are equivalent. There are some programming languages (Python, C/C++) that used in developing high traffic website but are not widespread.

Programming Languages and Resources for Web Developers

Here are a brief summary of coding languages and resources for web designers. HTML, CSS (or HTML5 & CSS3) PHP, MySQL, JavaScript (or JS frameworks like jQuery, Angular, React, Node, or Express) or MongoDB, Apache, Ruby on Rails, and Linux are related to web programming. The most  popular content management systems that use PHP & MySQL are  Wordpress, Joomla, and Drupal. Also, obtaining the following PHP and database certifications are highly rewarding for all custom web developers: Zend Framework 2, Zend Certified PHP Engineer, Oracle Database 11g Administration and Oracle Database 12c SQL Fundamentals. Backend coding is well suited for those interested in pursuing a career in web design and development; however, other options are mobile App design and development, system admin and software engineering. It is advisable to consult with an IT career counselor to understand what career options best fits your skills. For instance, if you want to be a software engineer, learning HTML and CSS might not fit the bill. Here is an excellent article for learning more on coding and technology career roadmap. Once you know what career path you wish to pursue, you can make a plan on what, when, and how to learn. There are lots of online resources for learning coding and technology in general. For teenagers and high school students, High School Technology Services offers variety of hands-on training. For adults and professionals, Coding Bootcamps and DC Web Makers Companies offer basic to advance project-based programming and technology classes.
