What is jQuery framework and how it is different from JavaScript programming

By Editorial Team on 2018-01-11

jQuery is one of the oldest and favorite frameworks of JavaScript or JS. There are lots of cool features that come with this framework like Calendar, dialog box, etc. It also have great developer community. This article reviews some of popular features or functionalities of jQuery that are used by most professional web designers while discussing in whay ways jQuery can outperform JS.

One of the major questions asked about JS and jQuery are “What is the major difference between jQuery and JavaScript?” Are they of same purpose or are the completely different? In this article, we will reveal what is jQuery framework and how it is different from JavaScript programming language, leaving you with a better understanding of both technologies.

JavaScript is a high-level, scripting, dynamic, multi-paradigm, object-oriented, prototype-based, weakly-typed language used for both client-side and server-side scripting. Its primary use is in rendering and performing manipulation of web pages. JavaScript runs on nearly every operating system, and an engine is included in mainstream web browsers. Developed in 1995 by Brendan Eich at Netscape Communications, it was originally called LiveScript but was renamed to JavaScript when Netspace and Sun did licence agreement.

jQuery is a fast, small, and feature-rich JavaScript library. It makes things like HTML document traversal and manipulation, event handling, animation, and Ajax much simpler with an easy-to-use API that works across a multitude of browsers. With a combination of versatility and extensibility, jQuery has changed the way that millions of people write JavaScript.

JavaScript is a light-weight (but heavier than jQuery), interpreted programming language; it is used to design for creating network-centric applications. The code written in JavaScript are dynamic it means you can create a variable at runtime and type is set on at runtime. jQuery cannot exist without JavaScript.

jQuery is built on JavaScript, thus all jQuery is JavaScript. But a major difference is with jQuery one has to write less line of code which is a big factor as it saves time and also easy to maintain codes with fewer lines. jQuery makes life of a developer easier. All common functionalities needed while developing any web application which requires many lines of JavaScript code are now grouped and made as a library called ‘jQuery’. Many actions like Animate, Delay, Fade-In can be done using jQuery with very few lines of code. On the other hand, JavaScript will take lots of lines of code for the same.

jQuery is pretty useful library that helps web developers with DOM(Document Object Model) manipulation, AJAX and browser compatibility. jQuery handles the inconsistencies a browser may have this used to be a big headache especially with Internet Explorer. You can write code which runs across browsers without having to know the various browser intricacies and won’t break. Unlike JavaScript, one needs to handle multiple browser compatibility by writing their own code.

Talking of speed, plain JavaScript is faster in accessing DOM (Document Object Model) as it cuts the overhead of jQuery. But JavaScript can be slower when you write some complex logic given the fact that developers may make major mistakes or use poor codes which lead to performance hit. jQuery is also fast an suited for complex operations where developer are prone to mistakes and writing poor lines of code.

jQuery does not cover JavaScript entirely. JavaScript has roughly two parts; The core language itself and the DOM API, which is implemented by browsers. The JavaScript engine interacts with your HTML via this DOM API. On the other hand, jQuery is built for DOM manipulation only. The goal was to let experienced developers write code, and let the library handle cross-browser compatibility issues. There have been some additions later, but jQuery still does not cover all the Vanilla JavaScript.

So, we can conclude that we need JavaScript for developing the front-end and JQuery helps us to use JavaScript with much ease. JQuery has its own pros and few cons also but if we compare the pros it outweights the cons. But at the same time even we can’t ignore the importance of raw JavaScript. So we need both based on project requirements.

Programming Languages and Resources for Web Developers

Here are a brief survey of coding languages and resources for web designers. HTML, CSS (or HTML5 & CSS3) PHP, MySQL, JavaScript (or JS frameworks like jQuery, Angular, React, Node, or Express) or MongoDB, Apache, Ruby on Rails, and Linux are related to web programming. The most  popular content management systems that use PHP & MySQL are  Wordpress, Joomla, and Drupal. Also, obtaining the following PHP and database certifications are highly rewarding for all custom web developers: Zend Framework 2, Zend Certified PHP Engineer, Oracle Database 11g Administration and Oracle Database 12c SQL Fundamentals. For those interested in learning more about web design and development, here are a list of step-by-step training guide articles: i- Become CMS specialist, ii- Become front-end specialist, iii- Become expert SQL developer, iv- Become expert PHP developer

JQuery coding is well suited for those interested in pursuing a career in web design and development; however, other options are mobile App design and development, system admin and software engineering. It is advisable to consult with an IT career counselor to understand what career options best fits your skills. For instance, if you want to be a software engineer, learning HTML and CSS might not fit the bill. Here is an excellent article for learning more on coding and technology career roadmap. Once you know what career path you wish to pursue, you can make a plan on what, when, and how to learn. There are lots of online resources for learning coding and technology in general. For teenagers and high school students, High School Technology Services offers variety of hands-on training. For adults and professionals, Coding Bootcamps and DC Web Makers Companies offer basic to advance project-based programming and technology classes.
