What is WordPress Content Management System and how it is different from Bootstrap

By Editorial Team on 2018-04-11

The most common way of designing a website is to use a Content Management System like WordPress. Another approach is to design a website using Bootstrap framework. This article articulates differences between these two methods.

If you have never worked with WordPress, there is a good chance you must have heard of Content Management System (CMS). A content management system such as Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, or Magento, often abbreviated as CMS, is software that helps users create, manage, and modify content on a website without the need for specialized technical knowledge. In this article, I will be discussing the difference between WordPress and Bootstrap.

WordPress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system. It is most associated with blogging but supports other types of web content including more traditional mailing lists and forums, media galleries, and online stores. Used by more than 60 million websites, including 30.6% of the top 10 million websites as of April 2018, WordPress is the most popular website management system in use.

On the other hand, Bootstrap is the world's most popular mobile-first and responsive front-end framework. It is a free and open source front-end framework for designing websites and web applications. It contains HTML and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) based design templates for typography, forms, buttons, navigation, and other interface components, as well as optional JavaScript extensions that you can use as a starting point to modify for your own site. It does not provide back-end functionality. Bootstrap was developed by Mark Otto and Jacob Thornton at Twitter. It was released as an open source product in August 2011 on GitHub.

Bootstrap is a front-end framework, which is a collection of CSS and JavaScript that works together to control the presentation of your webpage. It gives beautiful look to an HTML page. This consists of elements such as colors of your text, buttons styles, and how your site changes when viewed on a mobile device.

A site can be built by just customization of WordPress. It allows you to create new pages, upload images, adjust which items appear in your menu, and do a host of other tasks related to the content of your website.

In the version Bootstrap 3 framework, the entire Mobile-first styles are available in the library. To get your very own version, customization can be made on the currently Bootstrap’s components, jQuery plugins, and fewer variables. Over a dozen custom jQuery plugins are available on bootstrap which can easily be included. Bootstrap contains over a dozen reusable components built to provide iconography, navigation, dropdowns, alerts, pop-overs, and much more. Bootstrap provides a basic structure with Grid System, link styles, and background.

WordPress is based on MySQL and PHP. WordPress is more of a combination of frameworks, rather than just one specific framework. WordPress combines frontend and backend concepts and allows users to utilize drag and drop features, and pre-existing themes, to create different types of functional, and dynamic, websites and blogs. WordPress allows managing user information, create or delete a user, updating user information and passwords. Several plugins are available either free or premium which provides custom functions and features according to the user needs. Data such as page, post, custom files, comments, tags. Etc. could be imported and exported in WordPress CMS. WordPress also allows translating the entire content into the preferred language by the user.

In Bootstrap to do a required task you have to write the code then only it will work means you must have coding knowledge to do a task. Bootstrap provides Grid system to divide the User Interface or UI of a web page into grid view as per the desired requirement; it can be done by the developer who knows to a code of front-end development.

While in case of WordPress you have to just drag and drop according to your requirement of web development. WordPress allows users to have full control over the files, documents, as well as the design and display of the content. You do not have to know a single line of code to publish content using WordPress. The beauty of a good content management system is to allow any user to create and manage their content without any technical know-how.

Programming Languages and Resources for Web Developers
Note, custom WordPress platforms are not using any unknown technology! They will use the same languages in use by millions of other sites. HTML, CSS (or HTML5 & CSS3) PHP, MySQL, JavaScript (or JS frameworks like jQuery, Angular, React, Node, or Express) or MongoDB, Apache, Ruby on Rails, and Linux can all be used just like any other platform. Also, obtaining the following PHP and database certifications are highly rewarding for all custom WordPress developers: Zend Framework 2, Zend Certified PHP Engineer, Oracle Database 11g Administration and Oracle Database 12c SQL Fundamentals. It is advisable to consult with an IT career counselor to understand what career options best fits your skills. For instance, if you want to be a software engineer, learning HTML and CSS might not fit the bill. Here is an excellent article for learning more on coding and technology career roadmap. Once you know what career path you wish to pursue, you can make a plan on what, when, and how to learn. There are lots of online resources for learning coding and technology in general.
