Many open source programmers are unaware that there are professional certifications related to coding languages they are using on daily basis. Certifications issued by reputable companies like Oracle, Microsoft, etc can help college student candidates (or those who are new to the IT industry) to easily get entry jobs. Here are five major certifications that are very popular by IT recruiters.

  1. Java SE and EE Oracle Certifications
There are two major certifications offered by Oracle: core Java developers or Standard Edition (SE) and Java Enterprise Edition (EE). The Oracle Certified Associate Java SE Programmer (7 and 8) exam is the basic exam required to demonstrate solid understanding of Java as a programming language and is a prerequisite to being a certified Programmer. It focuses on key job roles in software application development and enterprise architecture. Unlike Java SE, its EE version is used for web services. Using Java EE, you can develop the skills to build scalable business services that feed dynamic web and mobile applications.
  1. CPP Institute
For those who know how to code in C or C++ and like to polish their resume, CPP Institute is a good place to start. They offer 4 certifications: C Certified Professional Programmer, C++ Certified Professional Programmer, C Certified Associate Programmer, and C++ Certified Associate Programmer

  2. Zend
Zend is an Object Oriented Programming framework for PHP. It is mainly used by enterprise or large scale websites as it has many complex features. Zend offers three certifications. Two of them are for Zend framework developers and one is for general PHP developers.

  3. Red Hat or Linux Professional Institute
Both Red Hat Company and Linux Professional Institute or LPI take certification exams for Linux programmers. LPI have two exams (101 and 102) and they are relatively easier than two exams (Red Hat Certified Engineer and Red Hat Certified System Admin) offered by Red Hat. The advantage of LPI is that their certifications are for general purposes (as they can be used for managing any Linux operating system); whereas, Red Hat certifications are only used for those who wish to work with Red Hat Linux operating system. It is also good to mention that there is another and much easier certification called Linux+ that is issued by CompTIA organization.

  4. Database Certifications with Oracle
Oracle has well-established reputation in offering and taking different certification exams related to database design, development, and management. Since more than 80% of small to large companies in the world are using Oracle databases, obtaining an Oracle certification on database is a great investment of time and money. Of most notable Oracle Database certifications are: Oracle Database SQL Fundamentals and Oracle Database 11g. Also, Microsoft offers SQL Server certification which is comparable with its Oracle counterpart.
